If you are living in the SEO space for a while, then you know the importance of SEO tools. So you must have heard the name of SEMrush.

There are various aspects of SEO. You need to have a tool that is capable of keyword research, backlink analysis, etc. Fortunately, SEMrush can do them all.

I have been using SEMrush for the last 3 years. It is also used by the world’s top bloggers, digital marketers, and SEO agencies.

In this comprehensive SEMrush review post, I will share all my experience and all the features.

So, let’s dive into it.

What is SEMrush?

SEMrush is a web-based tool that shows various SEO stats. Using this tool you can do domain analysis, keyword research, site audit, keyword position tracking, backlink analysis, and much more.

SEMrush is a successful product from the developer of SEOQuake. It is a popular SEO add-on for Chrome and Firefox that shows various SEO stats.

This a feature-packed and you would be amazed to explore them. Each feature is designed to give you a complete and in-depth analysis.

It has a clear user interface aimed at beginner-level bloggers and SEO experts. You can check your competitor traffic and top-ranking keywords. In short, using SEMrush you can spy on your competition.

They have a giant database of domains and URLs. In addition to that, their crawlers can crawl billions of web pages per day.

Complete List of SEMrush Features

There are a lot of features inside SEMrush. You can use features to do various SEO analyses.

After login, you will be landed on the SEMrush dashboard. The dashboard will look like this.

As you see in the above image, there are two menu options. The top navigation menu and the left navigation menu.

On the top navigation menu, you would get a few options like pricing, the marketplace, etc. But the left navigation menu is very long and contains many options.

So let’s explore them.

Domain Analytics

Using this feature you can analyze your competitor’s traffic, top-ranking pages, etc. In short, you can view their top-ranking pages and keywords.

No matter which industry or niche you belong to, there would be some early birds. As they have been in the niche for a while, they have some traffic and ranking keywords.

1. Domain Overview

Using this feature you can analyze them and know what they are doing. This gives you some ideas on how you can make your content strategies.

Using this feature you can analyze your competitor’s traffic, top-ranking pages, etc. In short, you can view their top-ranking pages and keywords.

If you are not doing competitor analysis then you are just swimming in the ocean without a target. This is the biggest success factor that makes a huge difference between a successful blog and a so-called blog.

For example,

I entered a popular blog’s domain name “searchenginejournal.com”. After that select your preferred country from the dropdown list. By default, the county is selected for the US.

As you can see in the image, there is a lot of data to analyze.

In various sections, it shows:

  • organic search traffic
  • paid to search for traffic
  • the total number of backlinks
  • display advertising
  • top organic keywords
  • traffic trend
  • top-ranking organic keywords, etc.

There are a lot of stats and data to explore. Each stat is divided into subsections where you would get information on various aspects. You can expand them and get the full report card.

SEMrush also provides an option to download the whole report in PDF format. This is very helpful and you can keep it for future use.

2. Organic Research

The next feature inside domain analytics is Organic Research. In the search box, you can enter the domain name, subdomain, or exact URL in this field.

So I continued with the same domain. I got these results.

As you can see, there are a lot of SEO data shown in the image. The first graph is the trend of the organic keyword. On mouse hover over the graph, you would get the keyword ranking on various positions.

On the button of the graph, you can see some Google logos is there. You might be thinking about what those signs are. Well, these Google logos show the Google Algorithm updates. If you want to know the update, then it will show the update.

There is also a tabbed section for:

  • positions
  • positions change
  • competitors
  • pages and subdomains

For in-depth analysis, you can explore them as well.

At the bottom of the page, you will get a subsection named Competitive Positioning Map. This is one of the unique features you would get in SEMrush only where you can see your competitors and their organic traffic in a visually rich representation.

3. Backlink Analysis

There is no second opinion that backlinks are considered the top-ranking factor of Google. So it is important to invest some time and effort to build quality backlinks.

The web is so big and where would you find some helping hands who are ready to give you backlinks? To make the process simple you can use a smart way.

Pick some of your competitors and analyze their domain. Luckily, SEMrush has a backlink analysis feature that can get the job done.

Enter your competitor domain and the tool will show you the total number of backlinks with other useful stats.

I want to continue with the same domain. So I entered the domain name. I got the following results.

As you can see, the backlink report contains new and lost backlinks over time.

Like MOZ, SEMrush has its metrics to calculate the Authority Score of a domain. 

The backlink analysis, shows the type of backlink (whether it is text, image, form, or frame). In addition to that, you will get the link attribute (Follow, Nofollow, Sponsored, and UGC).

There is an option to download the report and keep it for future use. You can reach out to the same sites and ask them for a backlink to your blog.

4. Advertising Research

Advertising Research is a very important feature if you want to run paid ads. This feature allows you to know the keywords your competitors are bidding for.

To test this feature, I used a different domain this time. For example, I entered another popular blog domain name “wordstream.com”.

I got the following result.

As you can see in the image, there are a lot of stats regarding paid advertising. In the beginning, you can see a paid search traffic trend over a time graph. This can show the estimated traffic, keywords, and traffic cost.

Scroll down and you would find a paid search position in a tabular representation. There are a lot of rows that show various stats like the name of the keyword, position, average search volume, CPC, etc.

This allows you to discover desktop and mobile keywords of your competitors bidding on Google Ads.

There are also tabbed options like position changes, competitors, Ad copies, Ad history, pages, and subdomains.

I was surprised to see that, they are tracking and keeping the AD copies.

As you can see in the image, I got some AD copies of Wordstream. After researching your competitor’s domain, you will have their AD copies that you can use in yours. This also helps you to understand what emotional triggers they are using in their ad copy to grab visitors.

5. PLA Research

If you are selling something online or you have a dedicated eCommerce site, then this option is helpful.

PLA stands for Product Listing Ads. This feature helps you to show product listing Ads of competitors with keywords.

To test this feature, I entered the most popular eCommerce site in the world “Amazon.com”.

I got the following results.

As you can see, there is a lot of data regarding this domain. On the first, you can find the number of Amazon running PLA ads. There is also a graphical representation that shows the PLA trends over time.

Under that, you would get a long list of keywords with many stats in a tabular format. It shows the particular product URL that the visitor would be landing on after clicking on the ad.

There is also an option to see the competitors of your niche. Just click on the competitor tab and it will show you a list of domains.

PLA Copies are one of the features you should explore. Click on the PLA Copies option that shows you all the AD copies of your competitors. You can grab some ideas and use them in your product listing Ads.

There is an option where you can set a notification. This will send you a notification when your competitor applies a new Ad strategy or new keywords.

6. Display Advertising

This is also another helpful feature for advertisers. Using this feature you can explore many things about your competitor domain.

I tried with the same Amazon.com domain to analyze their display advertising. So I just put the domain on the search bar and pressed search.

I got an interface like this.

As you can see, the feature shows the total number of display ads, the total number of publishers who show this ad on their site, the number of times the ad shows, etc.

This also shows the audience targeting gender, age, interest, etc. You can see the ad formats (Image, HTML, and text) with sample ads.

If you want to design your display ads, then you can get ideas from them. The ad format option would help you to decide which one you should use.

Other stats show the display ads by country and device.

7. Traffic Analysis

The traffic analysis feature gives you details about your competitor’s organic traffic. If you are a blogger or SEO professional then you should check this feature.

This is one of the areas inside the tool, where you would find a stack of data.

To test this feature I used the searchenginejournal.com domain. Just enter your or your competitor’s domain in the search box.

This will show an interface like this.

As you can see in the image, it shows the monthly traffic, unique visitors, page views per visit, average time spent on the site per visitor, bounce rate, etc.

There are some other tabbed sections like:

  • Audience Overlap
  • Traffic Sources
  • Top Pages
  • Geo Distribution
  • Destination sites
  • Subdomains
  • Bulk analysis

Hover your mouse over the graph and it will show you the traffic in different months. You can see the amount of traffic coming from desktop and mobile devices.

You can compare up to 3 competitor domains and analyze them side by side.

Scroll down and you will get the various other stats showing in subsections. You will find a graphical representation of traffic sources and traffic by country.

As we have discussed earlier, SEMrush has a huge amount of crawling capability. So you would get an in-depth traffic analysis with a lot of other data.

8. Ranks

SEMrush ranks websites based on various matrices. This is something like the Amazon Alexa rank.

They analyze websites and see the highest organic monthly traffic they are getting from organic searches.

As you can see in the image there is a list of websites with some other details like organic keywords, organic traffics, etc.

9. Domain vs Domain

Domain vs Domain is the same feature as we would discuss in the Gap analysis. If you want to know the feature now, then scroll down and find it in the Gap Analysis section of this article.

10. Charts

This chat feature allows you to draw various graphs with different parameters. Using this feature you can plot graphs up to 5 domains.

After putting the domain in the upper search box, you need to choose the country. Then choose one option on the respective lower dropdown menu. Then click on the plot chat button.

The tool would draw a graph with your chosen options. There are also some other options to customize the graph in different styles. Hover your cursor over the graph and it will show you the data.

Two other options allow you to add another chart and clone this chart.

You can try this option to compare your competitors and analyze their traffic or other stats in the same place.

Keyword Analysis

Find tons of keywords that are beneficial for your business. With this feature, you can find search volume, measure keyword competition, and lots of long-tail keywords.

1. Keyword Overview

In this section, you will get a variety of data regarding a keyword. Just enter a keyword and press the Search button.

For example, let’s search for the keyword “SEO tools”.

After the search, you will find an interface like this.

  • monthly search volume
  • the number of organic results
  • CPC
  • competition
  • CPC distribution
  • the trend over time
  • keyword suggestion

It will also show a list of phrase matches and related keywords. You can include them with the head term in your article and rank for those related keywords as well.

2. Keyword Magic Tool

The keyword magic tool helps to analyze keywords and study niche subtopics, and a group of keywords.

Just enter your seed keyword in the search bar and press the search button. The tool will generate a long list of all the various related terms in the table below.

Depending on the seed term, it would show you thousands of related keywords. There are a few modifiers that can be used to get more specific results from your seed keyword. You can choose from Broad Match, Phrase Match, Exact Match, or Related.

There is another section for question-based keywords. Click on the question section to get a long list of keywords.

3. Keyword Manager

The keyword manager provides an in-depth analysis of any given keyword. It can analyze up to 1000 keywords at a time.

Keyword Manager can analyze keywords in three ways:

  • From the Keyword Magic Tool main table
  • Imported manually
  • Import from Organic Research

After analyzing it would show you real-time matrices. Keyword Manager can analyze their Volume, Trend, CPC, Competitive Density, Keyword Difficulty %, SERP Features, Click Potential, Top Competitors, and Last Changes (Last Update).

If you have the requirement to analyze a lot of keywords, then you can use this tool.

4. Ad History

Ad History report shows you all of the domains that bid on the particular keyword. It also analyzes the PPC ads of Google’s paid positions over the past twelve months.

This gives you an idea about the competitor and how often they are bidding on the keyword. This also shows the competition level you are going to face on that keyword in Google’s paid positions.

5. Keyword Difficulty

Keyword difficulty is one of the most demanding and important features of any keyword research tool.

SEMrush analyses the top-ranking domains for a given keyword and calculates its authority. Then the tool estimates how hard it would be for a new website to outrank the existing competitors on the SERP.

SEMrush can calculate keyword difficulty of up to 100 keywords at a time. The score ranges from 0 to 100 and is shown in percentage. The higher the percentage is, the more difficult it is to rank.

You can group difficulty scores into 3 levels.

  • Below 60%: Low Difficulty
  • From 60%-80%: Medium Difficulty
  • Above 80%: High Difficulty

To test this feature, I entered some keywords in the tool.

For each keyword, it would show the keyword difficulty score, average monthly search volume, SERP features, keyword trend, etc.

Marketing Insights

Want to know the traffic source of your competitors who are their audience (audience size, age, gender, etc), and from where they belong? Get all data with the Marketing Insights feature.

1. Traffic Analytics

SEMrush Traffic Analytics feature under marketing insight is a market intelligence and competitive research tool. It provides estimated search traffic to a website from desktop and mobile devices.

Just enter the domain of your competitor and it will show you various stats.

To test this feature, I entered a domain name and got the following interface.

  • page views per visit
  • average time spent on site per visitor
  • bounce rate, etc.

There are some other tabbed sections like:

  • Audience Overlap
  • Traffic Sources

  • Bulk analysis

Click on any tab it would show you the detailed report.

Hover your mouse over the graph and it will show you the traffic in different months. You can see the amount of traffic coming from desktop and mobile devices.

2. Market Explorer

The Market Explorer tool will help you to dive into a niche and understand your audience. This allows viewing another competitor in your niche.

There 2 main sections in this tool. One is the All market and the other one is a narrow focus. All market features show you a broad picture of your market category. It shows you data and domains based on markets similar to your domain and your categories.

If you want to narrow your research and want a more focused look, then you can use the narrow-focus view. It narrows down the competitors based on the various parameters mentioned above.

I checked this feature by entering the domain “backlinko.com”. I got the following result.

As you can see in the image, you would get various data regarding your competitor. You will find a graph representing the competitor. You can filter this graph by the top 10, top 20, or top 30 domains in the market.

Scroll down and you will get various demographics and psychographic data such as age, gender, and interests of the audience.

3. Traffic Rank

This traffic rank shows the most popular website on the web. These features take the support of the Traffic Analytics Tool.

SEMrush measures metrics like Global Rank, Domain, Visits, Unique Visitors, Pages/Visits, Desktop Visits, Mobile Visits, Avg. Visit Duration and Bounce Rate.

There are also a lot of filter options. You can use them to sort the domains in your preferred filter options.

As you can see in the image, there is a long list of sites with various other data. If you want to target them and want to keep the data this traffic rank report would be helpful for you. There is a Pitch mode option that allows you to display only the traffic rank data on your screen.

Gap Analysis

Want to know where you are lagging behind your competitors? That could be keywords and even backlinks. With this Gap feature, you can find untapped keywords and link-building opportunities that you could have missed.

1. Keyword Gap

Keyword Gap is a very useful feature that helps you to discover untapped keywords. It offers a side-by-side comparison between your competitors and analyzes the similarities and differences between keyword profiles. It allows you to compare up to 5 domains at a time.

Enter the domains and choose the types of keywords from organic, paid, or PLA keywords to analyze.

To test this feature, I entered 4 domains on it. To say frankly, I entered 4 heavyweight names in the SEO and digital marketing niche. Here’s the result.

As you can see in the image, I got a list of keywords with average monthly search volume, keyword difficulty, competition level, results, and trends.

Can you find the Venn diagram sign between the domains? It indicates the intersection type between the keywords. There are 4 types:

  • All keywords: This shows all the keywords ranking for in Google’s top 100 of the entered domain.
  • Keywords Unique to the first domain: This shows the keywords that the first entered domain ranks for but the second does not.
  • Common keyword: This shows all the common keywords that both domains are rankings for in Google’s top 100 results.
  • Unique keywords: This shows all the keywords that are unique to each domain.

There are also various filter options to dive deeper into the data. The biggest advantage of this feature is to see the keywords that your competitors are ranking for but you’re not.

2. Backlink Gap

It is no secret that backlink is the topmost ranking factor of Google. So it is not an option anymore and you have to invest time and effort into it.

The backlink Gap feature is very helpful in finding backlink opportunities. Enter your competitor’s domain and it will show you all the refereeing domains linking to this domain.

This feature allows you to enter up to 5 domains at a time.

To test this feature, I entered 2 domains. Once you enter the first domain, the tool will automatically suggest the competitor when you click on the next text box. This is what I got.

As you can see in the image, there is a line graph showing both sites’ backlink profile growth over time. Hover your mouse cursor over the graph and it will show you the exact number at that time.

The biggest advantage of this feature is to get the backlink opportunities that you’re missing. This means the referring domains are linking to your competitors but not to your domain.

You can make a list of such domains and ask them for backlinks. As they have linked to your competitor, there is more chance that they would give you a backlink as well.

3. Bulk Backlink Analysis

The bulk backlink analysis tool is very helpful when you are doing this on a mass scale.

You might ask me if I can do the same thing in the Backlink Gap which allows you to enter up to 5 domains. Yes, you are right. You can do so in the Backlink Gap.

If your requirement is more than 5 domains? Let’s say I have to analyze 50 domains and URLs at a time. Then what can I do?

Well, the Bulk backlink analysis tool helps you to analyze a vast number of domains and URLs. You can enter up to 200 domains / URLs (one per line) in the box.

The interface looks like this.

Inside the box, enter domains or URLs. It allows up to 200. Keep the Auto option under the box as it is so that you can enter domains or URLs.

If you are running a full-time SEO agency, then this feature would be very helpful for you and save a lot of time.

Content Marketing

Brainstorming content ideas daily can wreck your mind. If you want to get lots of content ideas within a click then SEmrush can help you out. Along with great content ideas, you will get writing assistance and SEO content templates.

1. Topic Research

One of the common problems I have seen in the blogging space is the shortage of content ideas. Topic research sometimes takes a lot of time and finding a new and attractive content idea is always challenging.

With the Topic Research tool, you would get hundreds of topics and content ideas. You need to enter a topic and the tool will suggest many ideas.

To test this feature, I entered the topic “artificial intelligence”. I have an interface like this.

As you can see in the image there is a mind map structure showing all the subtopics. There are also some other viewing options available.

There is an option named Trending Subtopics First. Toggle the option and the tool will show you all the trending subtopics first.

On the right side of the screen, you can find a list of headlines. Under that, you would find a list of questions that you can include in your existing content or create separate ones.

It is also helpful for Location-specific content ideas. There is an option to change the location. You can add topics to the list of your favorite ideas. So it would be saved and you can explore the latter.

No matter which topic you enter, it would suggest hundreds of sub-topics with headlines and questions. You can analyze the sub-topics and questions to create a list of content ideas.

2. SEO Content Template

This feature helps you to create SEO-friendly content templates based on your targeted keywords. After entering a keyword or list of keywords, it would analyze the top 10 search results and create a template based on that.

This feature is very helpful for on-page SEO and you can create your content accordingly.

To test this feature, I entered the keyword “keyword research”. I got the following results.

As you can see, there are two categories of recommendations. One is key recommendations and the other is Basic recommendations.

Key recommendations include the suggestion on:

  • Semantically related words: It will show you a list of semantically related words. Include these words in your text.
  • Backlinks: It will show you a list of domains. Try to get backlinks from those sites.
  • Readability: This shows the average readability score of the top 10 URLs. This readability score measures how easy your content is to read.
  • Text length: This shows the recommended total word count of the article

The basic recommendation includes suggestions on a page title, meta description, H1 text, and content text.

To save this template, you can export it to a Word document. For this, click on the Export to DOC button.

Using the above recommendations, you can make a template of the content. This helps you to make SEO-friendly content and outrank other competitors.

3. SEO Writing Assistant

SEO writing assistant feature helps you to write better content. This allows you to enter the targeted keyword and provides various recommendations based on that.

At first sight, it seems like a simple text editor. But it contains some advanced features that can be helpful in writing well-crafted and SEO-friendly content.

The recommendations are very similar to the Yoast SEO plugin. In addition to that, you would get SEO recommendations based on the top 10 ranking pages for your given keywords.

There is a Google Docs Add-on available in the G Suite Marketplace. You can install it and start using it directly from Google Docs.

There is also a WordPress Plugin. Just search for SEMrush SEO Writing Assistant. Install and activate it. Then you need to connect it with the SEMrush account. After that, it would start suggesting various recommendations directly from the WordPress dashboard.

Lead Generation

Lead generation is an essential as well as a costly task. If you want to get more leads you can take the help of the SEMrush lead generation feature.

1. Lead Generation Tool

Lead generation is a crucial and never-ending part of any business. To get more leads you can use the SEMrush Lead Generation Tool.

This tool allows you to create a customized widget and place it on your website to collect leads. This shows a preview in live time. So you can see the changes at the time of editing.

You have a lot of customization options to customize the widget. Once someone submits a lead, you can send them to a customizable email template.

2. Oppty

If you are running a digital marketing agency, then this tool is very helpful.

This tool shows qualified leads depending on the location. Oppty is not a lead generation tool. All the leads are filtered through their data analysis.

Go to oppty.semrush.com and enter industry, city, and country in the respective fields then hit the “Get leads” button.

On the next screen, it will show you a preview. It shows you qualified leads but doesn’t show contact info or business names.

To get the information, you need to pay and buy leads. Per lead costs $3 and you can buy as many as you can.

After a successful purchase, you’ll get detailed information about each lead including the company name, digital marketing budget, location, and phone number.

Using this information, you can pitch each of them and convert them to your paying client. This tool provides a handy way to generate hundreds of leads in a short time.

Listing Management

This tool helps you manage your business listing on various platforms. The tool works for businesses based in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.

This helps you to keep your business listing correct and up to date on various platforms. After entering your business details, you can see how your business listing appears on various platforms like Google, Facebook, Yelp, and dozens of other search engines, apps, maps, and directories.

CPC Map

If you want to boost your business through Google Ads, then this feature would be helpful for you.

The CPC Map feature provides a way to see the costs of advertising on Google Ads in different states or regions of a country.

To test this feature, I selected the county as the USA. Here’s what it shows.

As you can see in the image, it shows the lowest and highest average CPC in the country. You can hover your mouse cursor over the map and it will show the CPC of that state.

Full Site Audit

You already know the importance of technical SEO. So site audit is a necessary thing to do on every site.

With the site audit tool, you can do an in-depth analysis of your website. It would check over 130 on-page and technical factors and gives recommendations.

You need to enter the domain name to perform a full site audit. Then it would take some time and give a full report.

Fix these issues and it will help boost the SEO of your website.

Log File Analyser

If you want to deep dive into the technical side, then the Log File Analyser tool is for you. It is a technical SEO tool that analyzes your website access logs and shows a report about how GoogleBot crawls your website.

This information helps to track various technical issues and optimize a crawl budget. This helps to understand how bots from Google search engines interact with your website.

Social Media Toolkit

Social Media Toolkit allows you to manage all your social media profiles in one place. If you are a social media manager then this tool is for you.

Nowadays omnipresent strategies are considered the best method to keep your audience engaged. Rather than visiting each platform, you can connect them to this tool and manage them from one place.

This feature allows you to create various social media posts and set a posting schedule.

Inside this, you would get a sub-feature named social media poster. This allows you to create, draft, and schedule various social media posters.

Another feature is named social media tracker which allows you to track their performance on various social media platforms.

Without leaving the SEMrush interface you can do all the above social media works. This way you can save a lot of time and automate them.

Projects

You can add different domain names to the project and keep track of them. You can add your domain and the tool will provide smart recommendations to improve your online visibility.

It allows you to set up 12 different tools to analyze all the aspects of your website.

Extensive Knowledgebase

SEMrush has an extensive knowledge base where you can get in-depth articles. There is a search bar and you can search for any topic or question.

They have written in-depth user guides for every feature available inside SEMrush. Whenever you face difficulty figuring out a feature, then head to the knowledge base and you will get detailed information.

They also have a dedicated blog section where you can get the latest SEO news and expert advice. They regularly publish blog posts and you can keep updated with the latest SEO trends.

Support

Support is a vital thing when it comes to online services.

One of the unique things SEMrush provides is phone call support. You can talk to their support specialist through a toll-free number. You can make a call between 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (EST), Monday through Friday.

In addition to that, you can contact the support team through email.

To test their call support, I also had some conversations with their support staff. They are knowledgeable and provide proper answers to my various questions.
